BRAD SMITH speaks out ..
I oppose the TTC-69 and I support the NO
Action Alternative.
At a time in our country when a
plethora of means are available to terrorists to penetrate our
borders undetected, despite what authorities have told us are their
best efforts to prevent such penetrations, installation of a 1200
foot wide corridor coming straight out of Mexico across our border
seems to be nothing less than the epitome of carelessness. Given the
number of immigrants coming into our country, threatening the well
being and security of our nation, opening a floodgate like the TTC
is a threat to our sovereignty. Given the present level of border
penetration now occurring, even with the natural barriers and fences
that exist today, what level of increase can we expect when vehicles
of mass transportation such as buses, rail, semi-tractor trailer
trucks and private automobiles are given a 1200 foot wide high-speed
artery to facilitate breaching our border? The border patrol is
already severely understaffed to do their job as it stands. There
will never be an adequate method to handle the level of border
penetration created by the Trans Texas Corridor; this is a huge
border security issue.
Governor Perry, (whom I’m sorry to
say I voted for) , would like nothing better than to put the "TTC
feather in his hat" as an attribute of his governing prowess, so
noted as to facilitate his bid for the White House someday in the
future. I know he thinks he is attractive enough to win that
election and he is driven to run for the Presidency by his ample
ego.
The fact is, the TTC is the most
egregious abuse of eminent domain law that the government of this
country has ever contemplated. The 44,000 acres of private property
that will be taken as right-of-way to construct this behemoth, is
contrary to what the founding fathers of this country intended.
Every soldier who has ever fought, died and spilled their blood to
protect our rights as citizens of the United States, fought for our
right to own and protect our property and to have a safe home or
farm.
Market value paid to individuals
whose private property is taken subject to eminent domain law is
notoriously lower than the ACTUAL fair market value of their
property. Forcing a person off their land for a price far less than
its true value is criminal……..it is tantamount to stealing in its
most blatant form. Legal costs incurred by private citizens to fight
the government in eminent domain cases always exceed the monetary
benefit won on behalf of the plaintiff property owner in those
proceedings. That is, if the property owner prevails; which is rare.
The disruption of traffic flow and
its existing continuity on other Texas roads and highways that will
be intersected by the TTC has not even been adequately contemplated
yet. The TTC will not achieve traffic relief; to the contrary, it
will cause tremendous traffic disruption. The past performance of
governmental bureaucracy tells us that this disruption would likely
not be dealt with until the TTC project is already well underway,
and by then, it will be too late to modify and develop a remedial
plan.
The TTC plan already calls for "limited,
controlled access" to the highway in order to keep speeds up and
not encumber the traffic flow. This means, due to limited on-ramps
and access, private citizens who are owners of larger acreage
parcels whose land is bisected by the TTC, could not conveniently
traverse their own land without potentially having a 40+ mile trek
to the next underpass, only to have another 40 mile trek back on the
other side just to get to the opposite side of their ranch.
I could go on and on. This a terrible idea, a
terrible attack on property rights and could be described as
"Perry’s Folly". Only this time, instead of resulting in a desirable
outcome like the beautiful state of Alaska, as did Seward’s Folly,
the American people will instead get a 4000 mile laceration of
concrete and steel across our land.
